Development Support Team India

This local Indian organisation was established in 1984 and has developed as a prominent support organisation in the development sector in Maharashtra. It is situated in Pune city – a three hour drive from bustling Mumbai and a cool relief from the heat of summer. The Centre for Social Response has been associated with DST for many years and we have both an established working relationship and a deep respect and friendship for their workers. DST is our local partner in India and connects us to the various projects and people we will visit on the Global Connections journeys. DST focuses its activities in four main areas of work:

    • A Women and Development program, including the establishment of numerous small self-help savings groups
    • Support, technical assistance and monitoring of development organisations to develop planning and conceptual clarity
    • Financial and non-financial support and capacity building with small groups working on poverty issues
    • Research, documentation and evaluation of development activities.

DST’s work has a strong emphasis on empowering women and it has worked extensively in earthquake affected areas around social rehabilitation as well as with income generation activities and micro-enterprise activities. It has also been prominently involved with organising and advocacy work with marginalised waste pickers from the streets of Pune. DST has a long association with the groups we will be visiting with our program and will assist us to orient ourselves to the wonder of India while we are in Pune.
